Chapter 501: I won’t agree even if it’s 500
The relationship between Wen Ran and Mo Xiuchen seemed to have changed, yet, it also seemed like it hadn’t.
What was different was that they no longer made public displays of affection to the envy of others.
What remained the same was their feelings for each other; they were still deeply in love, they just showed it in a different way. Wen Ran lived at the Wen family home and Mo Xiuchen, reluctant to live alone, came over in the small hours of the morning.
The second night, after work, he went straight to Wen’s house, claiming he was there to pick up a thermal lunch box, and dined at Wen’s house.
That night, he continued to stay in the room next to Wen Ran’s.
Wen Ran was polite but distant towards him, but he didn’t mind. Still, with a full-faced smile and gentle demeanor, he treated her as if he was the one who had done something wrong, trying to ingratiate himself to her and ask for her forgiveness.
Bai Xiaoxiao wanted to go home, but Wen Ran wouldn’t let her leave, afraid that once Bai Xiaoxiao left, Mo Xiuchen would take more liberties with her.
“Ranran, your relationship with Mo Xiuchen is so awkward to look at.”
The next morning, after Mo Xiuchen went to work, Bai Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but voice her feelings.
Wen Ran was peeling an apple, when she heard Xiaoxiao’s words, her hand paused slightly with the knife. She took a quick glance at Xiaoxiao, before lowering her head and continuing to peel the apple in her hand.
“I feel bad for Mo Xiuchen, he is such a proud man, yet he’s trying so hard to please you. Cheng Jia is returning soon, are you really going to push him aside?”
The night before, during dinner, Bai Xiaoxiao had asked Mo Xiuchen; Cheng Jia was returning in three days.
Wen Ran wasn’t in a hurry, but Xiaoxiao was worried for her. Even though Mo Xiuchen has no feelings for Cheng Jia, Cheng Jia’s feelings for Mo Xiuchen were known to all. People tend to make mistakes when they feel lost.
She feared that once Cheng Jia realized their current relationship, she would take advantage of the situation, resort to various tactics, which was something to be worried about.
After finishing peeling the apple, Wen Ran handed it to Bai Xiaoxiao, her tone calm as she said, “Xiaoxiao, after eating the apple, let’s go to the hospital.”
“Why should we go to the hospital? It doesn’t matter if I skip rehabilitation for two days.”
Bai Xiaoxiao still had the previous topic on her mind, looking at Wen Ran in confusion.
“I have something to discuss with my father. Besides, you can’t delay your recovery because of me. It seems like we should go to the hospital together.”
“Alright!”
Hearing Wen Ran say this, Bai Xiaoxiao could only agree.
**
The ones who escorted them to the hospital were Qing Feng and Qing Yang. Bai Xiaoxiao didn’t need people to carry her into and out of the car anymore, with Wen Ran’s help she could manage on her own.
They had called Gu Kai before going. As soon as they arrived, Gu Kai greeted them with a nurse who he had called to push Bai Xiaoxiao’s wheelchair.
“You guys go with Xiaoxiao for her rehabilitation. After she’s done, bring her to my office.”
Gu Kai told Qing Feng and Qing Yang who were standing behind him. Ever since Bai Xiaoxiao was discharged, the two had been assigned by Mo Xiuchen to protect her.
Now that Wen Ran had him to accompany her, they were no longer needed.
Qing Feng and Qing Yang agreed and left with Bai Xiaoxiao.
“Ranran, do you need to see dad about something?”
As Gu Kai and Wen Ran walked into the hospital side by side, he asked, showing his concern.
“Not necessarily dad, I’m just feeling a little bored at home and wanted to get some fresh air.” Wen Ran responded with a faint smile. On the phone, she had only casually asked.
Gu Kai had already told her about her condition. These past few days, she hadn’t taken any more medication.
Gu Kai brought her back to his office, poured her a glass of water, and sat down with her on the sofa. “Ranran, haven’t you been taking your medication these past few days?”
Wen Ran replied honestly, “Nope, I still don’t even know what that medication is supposed to treat.”
She looked at Gu Kai with bright eyes. She knew there was more than one disease she had. Initially, she thought the medication was simply to adjust her body. But now, she knew it was not.
Gu Kai’s eyes flickered, and he said reassuringly, “It’s medicine to help your body expel toxins. As you are here today, I’ll accompany you for a check-up later, to see if the long-term medication has had any effect.”
As it turned out, he had also been discussing with his father about inviting Wen Ran to the hospital for a check-up.
In the past, when she didn’t know her condition, they had had to lie about the reason for her tests. But now, as she knew the truth, there was no need to hide anything anymore.
Wen Ran’s hands paused slightly over the cup; an emotion flashed through her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. Her gaze was clear and serene, as tranquil as water: “Okay.”
Seeing that she didn’t resist, Gu Kai let out a sigh of relief, his lips curving up into a gentle smile: “I heard that Xiuchen has been staying at your house these past few days, is that true?”
“Yes.”
Wen Ran fell silent for a while, before replying with a single syllable.
She had been feeling conflicted. She knew that if things continued as they were, she would not be able to leave Mo Xiuchen. Therefore, her visit to the hospital today was obviously not for a breath of fresh air.
She wanted to have a check-up, to know the current status of her condition, to see if it was the same as last time.
The words of Fu Jingyi in her dream that night left her terrified.
She didn’t fully believe what he said over the phone that afternoon. But once all the memories came back in her dream, she had no option but to believe him.
Nobody knew about that part of her childhood memory. After waking up from the nightmare, she only mentioned to Bai Xiaoxiao thatwas it. Neither Wen Jin, nor Mo Xiuchen, or Gu Kai knew about it.
She had no intention of letting anyone know, be it Wen Jin, or Gu Kai, or her father Gu Yan.
If what Fu Jingyi said was true, she was afraid that Gu Kai, once he knew, would end up telling Mo Xiuchen. She would absolutely not let him find out. Therefore, she wouldn’t tell them.
“Ranran, that night I conveyed your words to Xiuchen, and he wanted to go to you immediately. I stopped him, but I never expected him to come to you in the middle of the night.”
Wen Ran didn’t say a word, only pursing her lips.
“These past few days, has he been pressuring you into going back home with him?”
Seeing her silence, Gu Kai didn’t know what to say, fearing a wrong word would upset her again.
Wen Ran shook her head, “He hasn’t. He hasn’t even mentioned these things. Brother, you’re good friends with Xiuchen. What should I do for him to agree to a divorce?”
“I also disagree.”
Gu Kai changed his attitude and became stern in an instant. A second before, his gaze was gentle and affectionate, but in the next moment, he hardened his expression.
Seeing his stern expression, Wen Ran pursed her lips, and her heart was filled with indescribable feelings. She asked in a calm tone, “Brother, if I’m not your sister, would you still say the same thing?”
Gu Kai frowned, glared at her harshly, and said rigidly, “Even if you weren’t my sister, I still wouldn’t agree.”
Upon hearing this, Wen Ran suddenly smiled. But unlike her usual bright smiles, it carried a hint of sadness. Gu Kai, unsettled by her smile, lowered his head, heard her soft, calm voice:
