Chapter 43: Compensation (4)
Since Luke had enough to buy items up to the fifth tier, he could see a lot more stuff in the shop. Naturally, he went to check the weapons option first. He frowned when he realized that tier four and five swords were basically the same claymore. Still, the weapon of the fifth tear had an effect, something that Luke only saw in magic ranged weapons.
Frozen Claymore
Effect: decreases the target’s speed by ten percent whenever it lands an attack up to fifty percent. The effect will last for five seconds.
Strength + 8, Endurance + 4
Durability: 30/30
Cost: 800 gold coins
“It is a pretty decent weapon,” Shalia said. “If you increase your speed and focus on fighting the wolves one at a time, I am sure you can succeed in defeating all of them hy yourself.”
“While it is a good weapon, Luke will need more than extra offensive power,” Rina said. “If he makes a mistake and something unexpected happens, he won’t be able to rely on his defenses against so many enemies.”
Again, another argument started, and again, Luke could see where both of them were coming from. Truth to be told, Luke didn’t need a new sword, but that light blue sword was too cool to ignore. Shalia was right. By using that sword and increasing his speed, Luke could fight against several of the wolves at the same time, even if he doesn’t rely on skills and spells. However, just like Rina said, a single mistake would result in his death… to prevent things from getting even more complicated. Luke knew what he needed to do… so he bought the sword.
“I see… those boots grant us the power to use Dash Lv 03 and those bracers add the burning effect on punches…” Luke thought while he was checking other items that he could buy.
Luke found the items that Andrew and Lucy had. They were pretty useful, so he could tell that he wasn’t the only one who got lucky… In the end, Luke didn’t find anything that was worth buying. Since everything he could buy was three tiers below his sword in terms of usefulness. So, he decided to save the coins for later.
“You really went and decided to buy a sword and nothing else, huh,” Rina said.
“I am a bit tired, so I think it will be better if I focus on speed in order to avoid mistakes when I decide to attack the crystal,” Luke said. “I am aware that I will be troubling you two with this, but I will be counting on you. For the time being, I will fight without using mana, so you can get mine and get as much as possible to use when the time comes.”
“I guess there is no other choice… just don’t get used to it,” Rina said and then looked away, a bit embarrassed.
“What a dull woman…” Shalia said while frowning.
It didn’t take long for Luke to have a chance to test his new sword and speed. Three starving wolves appeared and headed toward his location… it was rare to see two of them walking together, much less three. Nevertheless, his head was completely cool when the beasts dashed toward him. When the fastest one tried to smash him with its claws, Luke just moved to the side after taking a few steps. Much to his surprise, he moved too much from the enemy, so he didn’t have the chance to attack with his sword. It was hard to believe, but Luke’s speed really doubled, and he would have to get used to that.
The other two surrounded Luke, so he couldn’t move to the sides. So when they tried to crush him with their claws, he repelled the attacks by swinging his new sword. The wound was small, but the monsters still grunted due to the freezing effect of the sword. Luke used that chance to strike both of them with a single swing, but before he could attack by the third time, the remaining Wolf attacked him from behind… or at least the monster tried. His two attacks made the wolves flinch, so Luke had room to move again.
“Even if I am faster than them now, it is useless if I can’t take them down faster than before,” Luke thought.
Luke began to run around the enemies while he was close enough to strike them. Thanks to that, they didn’t have room to run and attack. Not to mention, Luke was fast enough to leave the beasts unable to react, so the damage was piling up. When one of the monsters got too carried away and tried to smash him with its claws, Luke jumped to the side, just enough to dodge the attack. Without hesitation and even before the beast’s claws could hit the ground, Luke made his sword pierce its throat.
The other two monsters ignored the failure of their ally and tried to surround Luke yet again. One of them tried to bite him, and the other used its claws to prevent both of them without moving, Luke grabbed his broadsword with his left hand and blocked the claws, and with his right one, he made the other beast taste the blade of his frozen claymore. The monster died instantly.
The remaining wolf flinched, and Luke could see the hesitation in its eyes. As expected, that type of creature wasn’t completely stupid… or perhaps it was the only one Luke met that day that valued its life more than the mission. While Luke was staring at it, slightly surprised, the wolf tried to escape. However, it failed pathetically since Luke’s speed was greater. Without even letting the beast notice that had happened, Luke pierced the right side of the monster’s neck.
