Chapter 113: Reason (1)

“They are reproducing pretty fast… huh,” Luke frowned when he managed to silently defeat all the monsters in a nest without alerting the others nearby.

In front of him, Luke could see an egg that was one meter tall, and behind him, he could see some eggshells… the monsters shouldn’t be in Atlanta for long, and yet, they were already reproducing at a scary speed. At that rate… the monsters will run out of things to eat and then they will spread across the country and repeat the same things they did in Atlanta. Luke had to prevent that at any cost…

“What are you going to do, Luke?” Rina asked.

“It is obvious what I am going to do… this is war and they are breeding soldiers,” Luke replied. “This war will keep going forever if I leave those eggs alone.”

Luke used Spark Ball and fried the egg. Strangely enough, he even received experience and gold coins. He didn’t like what he was doing, he was doing it because it was necessary, and yet, the system was rewarding him… that was more than a little worrisome.

“In any case, I wonder how those guys are planning to fight at night… I don’t hear much noise in the distance, so they aren’t trying that hard,” Luke said.

They couldn’t fly, so their mobility was limited. Even if they hunt in earnestly during the day, Luke couldn’t see them doing much. Regardless, Luke was determined to hunt until midnight, and then he will rest after checking the shop. He needed a long-ranged weapon that would rely on his stamina and that he could use several times because it would be a waste to not use his SP. Besides, the limited range of Weapon Augmentation was useless against flying enemies.

“I wonder how I can increase the range of Weapon Augmentation,” Luke said.

“You just need an upgrade crystal. A friend of mine used it to increase the rank of one of his skills,” Shalia said. “All the attributes of the skill doubled after getting a new rank and became level one again.”

“Oh… so such a thing actually exists,” Luke said, surprised.

“Yes, but they can only be upgraded once they reach level ten,” Rina added. “I never got one, but I heard of a few individuals that got them, they are extremely rare.”

“I see… but if the level resets and doesn’t lose power, the cost will continue to go up, right?” Luke asked.

“Nope, the cost of the same skill in different ranks is the same, otherwise, it wouldn’t be that useful to have a skill in another rank that costs too much MP or SP,” Shalia replied.

That was a relief… and it also explained why Weapon Augmentation was so incredibly useful. Maybe the almost auto-aim was a bonus of the rank since it was at least two ranks above common. Nevertheless, finding such an item will be hard. Maybe it was the reward for a tough quest or the drop of defeating the crystal owner that brings monsters to Earth.

In any case, Luke hunted the Koriri for several hours, but he wasted some time trying to be stealthy. Thanks to that, he didn’t destroy that many nests before midnight. Still, he obtained a few thousand gold coins thanks to that. Just enough to buy a better sword or the new item that he wanted for physical and long-ranged attacks. However, Luke didn’t find anything obvious in those aspects.

“I would recommend a boomerang for a physical weapon that can be used for long ranged attacks,” Rina said.

“A boomerang… yeah, they can be bought, I am not a skilled guy to use such a difficult weapon to handle,” Luke said.

“It is not a difficult weapon to use, you are fast and have good eyes,” Rina said. “Besides, I can give you the best tips on how to handle that type of weapon.”

Luke wasn’t so sure of that. Even with the help of someone like Rina, he was aware that he was pretty clumsy. He recalled his teenage years where he used to trip all the time… was that a sign of lack of physical activity or clumsiness? It was hard to tell.

“They come in all shapes and sizes, huh,” Luke said. “That sounded hella weird coming out from my mouth.”

For some reason, shurikens and boomerangs were considered by the system as a single type of weapon. Shurikens were a bit too big, so Luke went and bought three silver boomerangs that had the shape of a three-pointed star.

“The trick to use it is to consider the distance and the trajectory you want the boomerang to make,” Rina said. “Relax your shoulders and use only the strength of your wrist.”

“Trajectory, huh… I got it,” Luke said.

While Luke had decided to rest for the day, he wanted to test what he just had heard. He never practiced many sports, but there was one he practiced for two years in high school, and he got fairly good at… it was tennis. Predicting the trajectory of the opponents was as good as having good reflexes, after all.

In any case, Luke made Artiuno fly high in the sky, and when he found a target, he jumped from his back toward it. Even when he was one hundred meters above the nest, he saw a slight movement on the target’s head and immediately threw two boomerangs. Much to everyone’s surprise, a second later, the weapons pierced the creature’s neck deeply, preventing the monster from screaming.

You obtained 35 experience points.

You obtained 35 gold coins.

“That was a good shot… even though you used too much strength and forced the weapons to pierce the monster’s neck,” Rina said.

“It would be weird if I could make a boomerang bend upward to return to me,” Luke frowned.

“With enough practice, you can do that,” Rina said as if it was a matter of fact.
