Chapter 109: New pet (3)

After one hour of the flight, only Luke and another group were left behind in the airplane. Since he was going to work alone, he was learning the ins and outs of using parachutes. Rina said that he could survive the fall of ten kilometers of height even if he didn’t enhance his endurance with his current level. Still, Luke didn’t feel like testing that or wounding his legs as soon as he landed. So, the parachutes were necessary.

When the door opened, and he finally saw Atlanta, Luke saw many big birds flying around. While they were big, they didn’t have the courage to approach the airplane. He couldn’t use Appraisal since they were so far away, but he could see that their bodies were white and light-blue… they probably were flyings monsters that could use ice magic. Luke could tell because a good part of Atlanta was covered in ice, and even from above, the temperature was strangely cold for that time of the year.

“Hehe, I already know the name I will give to my newest pet…” Luke grinned and then jumped.

Luke didn’t tell anyone of his plans, so the soldiers behind him frowned when they heard that… it was hard to believe, but it seemed that he could tame more than one monster. The excitement in Luke’s heart increased while he was falling because he didn’t want to mess up and because he noticed that some monsters were looking at him. Fighting in the air would be troublesome, but it wasn’t like he couldn’t do it.

“Those are the Koriri… this kind of monster is a bit troublesome because they hunt in packs,” Rina said. “They are like the frozen wasps with their strategies, but their power is much greater.”

“What a weird name…” Luke said. “Well, if things get dicey, I will be counting on you two.”

After a while, the monsters approached and began to fire Ice Arrows toward Luke, a massive barrage of them. Luke used his sword to block them, but he couldn’t attack since the range of his skills was short.

“Well… at least once I tame one of them, they will be powerful enough to help,” Luke said.

Not powerful enough to be useful against others of the same species, but powerful enough to carry Luke on his back. Still, those worries left Luke’s mind when he realized that he would become an even easier target once he pulled the parachute. He will have to wait for a while, and even so, the monsters will destroy the parachutes…

Luke had some needles with him, but they certainly wouldn’t reach the enemies… in the end, Luke just accepted the unavoidable. He activated his parachutes when he was five hundred meters above ground level. Still, when he was at three hundred, the monsters damaged it. Before that could make Luke spin in the air uncontrollably, he cut the parachutes with his sword and fell on his feet. Upon landing, the shock made Luke’s legs tremble, but the pain was bearable. He just couldn’t run at his top speed for a while…

When they saw that Luke wasn’t moving, the monsters decided to approach a bit more, and that had been a terrible mistake. Luke used Spark Balls without a care, and the monsters were caught off guard. The attacks did a lot of damage since the air around the birds was particularly humid. Still, Luke had to use all his mana just to kill a few of them. He also lost the chance to tame one because he couldn’t risk it until his legs got better.

“Not bad, I guess,” Luke thought.

The monsters didn’t drop anything, but Luke sighed in relief when his legs got back to normal before new monsters could appear. It seemed that he landed pretty far away from the crystal since no monster appeared.

Luke turned around and confirmed that a good part of the city had been covered in ice. Even the fallen buildings had a thick layer of frost over them. As for those that still were standing, the ice made the glass thicker. When Luke’s body began to cool down, he realized that the temperature was too low… his set of sweatpants and shirt wouldn’t keep him warm.

“Let’s hope that this will make the Cold Resistance level up a lot… Anyway, can you feel the presence of your allies nearby?” Luke asked.

“No,” Rina replied.

“If my acquaintances had picked someone from this place and they didn’t manage to deal with those birds until now… then their partners would be pretty pathetic and would be dead by now,” Shalia said.

That seemed a bit harsh, but Luke agreed with her in some aspects. Luke didn’t see many signs of zombies when he was falling, and considering the levels of the Koriri, those who didn’t get strong on the first few days would never be able to deal with them. Considering that the Koriri was also the cause of the small number of zombies, then they became a lot stronger than they originally were.

In any case, Luke decided to investigate the area first while he looked for the crystal. It was a pity, but fighting the birds while using his sword was probably impossible, so he will have to rely on Weapon Augmentation and Spark Ball.

While Luke probably could ask Rina and Shalia the location of the crystal, he felt that it would be better to get a feel of the city first. Thanks to that, he had the chance to find a small group of zombies being defeated by a single Koriri. The monster fired Ice Arrows that pierced their bodies and turned them into ice statues in a matter of seconds…
