Chapter 20
Chapter 20
C20 – Snake King
Hong Yangqiu’s usually serene heart was seized by a flicker of panic. A loud noise had pierced the air, followed by an eerie silence. Yet, he remained engulfed in darkness, unable to discern anything around him.
What had happened? In mere minutes, his opponents had been vanquished!
Fists clenched, Hong Yangqiu stood resolute as the battle falcon on his shoulder gazed indifferently into the void. Xie Ziyu felt the same overwhelming pressure. She was aware of Jiao Yuanju’s prowess, but his fearsome display had surpassed her expectations. The fight had barely commenced!
The black fog lingered. Jiao Yuanju’s skill promised three minutes of impenetrable darkness, and though it had begun to clear, Hong Yangqiu was too impatient to wait. He loathed the vulnerability of unseen eyes upon him, Jiao Yuanju’s whereabouts eluding him. With resolve, he launched into action.
The black hawk soared from his shoulder, weaving swiftly through the mist, capable of crossing dozens of meters in the span of two seconds. Hong Yangqiu’s heart lurched, and he bellowed, “Flying Eagle, Wind Blade Combo!”
With a mighty beat of its wings, the black hawk unleashed a flurry of unseen Wind Blades into the shroud of night.
The Earth Boar withstood the onslaught, collapsing to the ground with a pained cry. Jing Haokuo, pale yet determined, locked eyes with his leader. “Boss, it’s all in your hands now!”
Beside Jiao Yuanju, they glimpsed a terrifying claw, its origin a mystery, but unmistakably a product of Jiao Yuanju’s craft.
Zhen Heyi was struck with awe. She cast a lingering glance at Jiao Yuanju and pressed on with the Lightning Leopard, probing the enemy’s defenses on his behalf.
Both she and Jing Haokuo realized that the outcome of this match might have been sealed by Jiao Yuanju from the moment the black fog rolled in.
The Lightning Leopard, unable to reach the black hawk above, instead bolted towards the colossal black spider. Lightning streaked across the mountain, casting a silvery glow upon its form.
Xie Ziyu remained still as stone. Her Combat Pet spider had not budged since the onset, a statue in form, yet its pointed fangs hinted at a complexity beyond the onlookers’ assumptions.
The black hawk continued its swift flight, the surrounding black fog dissipating more with each passing moment. Everyone present could now make out where the others were.
Hong Yangqiu and Xie Ziyu refrained from assisting one another, seemingly intent on probing Jiao Yuanju.
But it was Zhen Heyi who took action.
“Wrath of Thunder!” she commanded.
Previously overlooked, Zhen Heyi suddenly unleashed the Lightning Leopard in front of the black spider. The long-concealed, fearsome lightning streaked through the leopard’s fur, unleashing a barrage of a dozen bolts at the black spider.
The stage was awash with the blinding brilliance of the lightning. Zhen Heyi was truly exceptional.
Before Zhen Heyi could savor her triumph, the black spider materialized. In an instant, countless fine threads ensnared the Lightning Leopard from all directions. The leopard’s skin was sliced open, and it collapsed, poisoned by the toxic spider silk. Xie Ziyu’s ambush left Hong Yangqiu utterly stunned. Then, a shadow flickered, and Hong Yangqiu’s sight blurred.
Xie Ziyu, with a smile gracing her icy demeanor, watched as Jiao Yuanju and Qing She appeared before her. She had been the enigma from start to finish, never holding Hong Yangqiu or Jing Dehai in high regard. Without flaunting her combat prowess, she ensured that anyone who crossed into her strike zone was swiftly dealt with.
Suddenly, an immense net materialized around Jiao Yuanju, the very one the black spider had been weaving in silence, now ready to ensnare its prey.
The black spider lunged at Jiao Yuanju with incredible speed, seemingly trapping him in a dire predicament.
Just then, a black hawk swooped down from the heavens.
“So, you’ve finally decided to strike after waiting all this time,” Xie Ziyu mused.
The black spider, wary of the hawk’s proximity, slowed its assault, fearing injury from the avian predator. As the hawk neared one meter above the ground, it veered sharply, unleashing several Wind Blades at the spider.
“Hong Yangqiu!” Xie Ziyu cried out, dodging with a look of sheer alarm on her face. Then, to her astonishment, she noticed a small green snake on her arm, looking on with indifference. She had no idea when it had appeared, but the venom was already coursing through her.
The black spider collapsed suddenly. Its shell was tough, resistant to any easy bite, but Jiao Yuanju had no intention of biting it anyway.
As the black fog cleared, it revealed the chaos strewn across the battlefield. Combat Pets and humans alike were downed, leaving only Xie Ziyu and Jiao Yuanju standing.
A hush fell over the crowd, their eyes wide in stunned silence as they took in the eerie aftermath.
Xie Ziyu swayed and started to fall, but Jiao Yuanju was quick to catch her, cradling her in his arms. He was taken aback by her sudden weakness, the poison having sapped her strength and left her limp in his embrace.
Eoldrai acted swiftly to administer the antidote.
With Xie Ziyu in his arms, Jiao Yuanju turned to the three speechless figures in the stands and offered a smile. “Principal, it’s time to announce the outcome.”
Principal Pei Dong snapped out of his shock. His mind was a whirlwind; the battle had been brutal. Though there were no fatalities, Jiao Yuanju stood alone as the victor.
A different thought preoccupied everyone else. Hadn’t they all joined forces against the trio from Class 7? Yet now, apart from Jiao Yuanju, they had all been defeated. His strength was undeniable.
“Jiao Yuanju takes first place in this competition. The remaining nine contestants will be ranked based on video playback. Jiao Yuanju will represent Azure Academy as the captain of the Skysea Army’s Combat Pet Team. Congratulations to him!”
The silence lasted but two seconds before cheers pierced the sky. The crowd rose to their feet, clapping furiously. Their eyes were on Jiao Yuanju, the Snake King.
