Chapter 672: Chapter 666 – In Charge
“Well, thank you in advance. I’m not afraid to tell you that my pirate crew is substantial, more than 300,000, and of these, only about 70,000 to 80,000 are crew members. The rest are their families, many of whom are elderly, women, and children. We don’t have a base, we live on ships and replenish supplies on planets regularly,” Jasmine Davis hesitated, then suddenly spoke.
Finn Lewis looked surprised at Jasmine. “Among pirate crews, we could be considered a large one. However, we aren’t large enough to have our very own base. Because we are pirates, everyone can attack us without repercussions. Even if we establish a base on a planet, we wouldn’t be able to defend it. So, it’s better to live on the ship,” Jasmine continued on her own accord.
“So if you run away and we all die, the ghosts of over 300,000 people will haunt you,” Jasmine Davis said, menacingly.
Finn knew exactly what she was insinuating with her threat. Though he was tempted to remind her that they survived by plundering and that their deaths would garner no sympathy, he thought about the women, children, and elderly among their ranks and sighed.
“Relax, at least I don’t consider myself as heartless as those royals.” Finn waved his hand dismissively. He had always questioned the royals’ humanity for ignoring the plight of billions and using them as a source of, what they call ‘life essence’.
Humanity may have vanished a long time ago.
What Jasmine Davis told Finn surpassed what he had anticipated. He hadn’t expected her to talk to him about this situation. After leaving the cabin for the bridge, he could still see Yuka Young’s mockery. But, it didn’t bother him.
“Let’s rendezvous with the larger ship first.” Finn couldn’t think of a better plan at that moment. The authorities wouldn’t care about the fates of Jasmine and her crew. If it were only one or two people, it would have been okay, but the authorities wouldn’t care about the deaths of hundreds of thousands. If they were indifferent, their fate was clear and evident.
Thus, Finn was left with no choice but to stay. He had to find another solution. Contacting the authorities was fruitless. He had a headache. Jasmine Davis was clever; even though they hadn’t known each other for long, she had identified Finn’s fatal weakness and knew the kind of person he was.
The chairs on the bridge could recline for rest and also had a massage function. With Luna’s help, they finally rendezvoused with Jasmine Davis’ warship. Its massive size could easily swallow their tiny spaceship.
Once they were aboard the Peach Blossom warship, Finn finally exhaled in relief. This ship was clearly not the one Jasmine used when picking him up from Earth – it was much larger and better-armed.
But to the opposing fleet, it was no more than a drop in the ocean. When Finn and his crew boarded the Peach Blossom, they realized that their pursuers were merely five or six hours behind.
“Commander, we have received a communication request from the other side,” announced a communications officer shortly after Finn set foot on the Peach Blossom’s bridge.
“Put it through,” Jasmine Davis said, unperturbed by the incoming call from their enemy.
“Heh heh, Commander Davis, we meet again.” Surprisingly, the person who appeared on the screen was a somewhat sleazy-looking middle-aged man with a voice Finn recognized. It was Heibear Lincoln, a man whose voice was entirely incongruent with his appearance.
“Oh, and you’re here, the mysterious number #88,” A grim flash sparked in Heibear’s eyes.
“Spit it out or cut it out,” Jasmine Davis retorted coldly.
“Simple, you should know the rules of our underworld, Commander Davis. We’re after the life of your #88. Kill him now, and we might spare you a life. After all, you’re useless to us,” Heibear, with a glint in his eyes, said.
“Impossible, Heibear, do you take me for a fool?” Jasmine Davis scoffed.
“Then you have chosen death. You surely can’t believe that you can escape. Let me tell you this, it wouldn’t surprise me if your #88 could escape, but once he does, you’re all doomed,” Heibear laughed coldly, pointing at Finn.
“Who do you think you’re talking to? Stand back and let your master speak,” Finn said mockingly, taking a step towards Jasmine Davis.
Observing that Jasmine Davis didn’t have any objections, Heibear watched her intently, then turned his attention to Finn. “It doesn’t matter who I am. What matters is that you’re dead meat. Be honest, I’ve never killed a member of the royal family. Do you know how it feels?” he said with a smirk.
“If you don’t shut up, I can’t guarantee that your master won’t exchange your life for something I have, I wonder how much your life is worth. One billion star credits, two billion, or is it ten billion?” Finn said with an icy stare.
Though miles apart, Heibear choked on Finn’s words, unsure of how to respond, for he knew that if Finn Lewis wanted his life, he might just get it.
“That’s enough, step aside,” a calm voice interjected and a man appeared beside Heibear, an ordinary-looking middle-aged man. However, his voice was a familiar one to Finn; it was the voice of the auctioneer at the Blackwater Sect.
“We meet again.”
“Yes, indeed. May I ask what brings you here, sir?” Finn, touching his nose, asked.
“Not advice, I assure you. I simply need to borrow your life,” the middle-aged man remarked with a fake smile.
“Many seek my life, unfortunately, very few of them have lived long enough to take it. If I can deal with the man behind you, what makes you think you stand a chance?” Finn responded rather casually.
“For now, we have you in our clutches, don’t we? I once told you, always leave room for maneuver, for we may meet again. However, Mr. Lewis, you seem to have disregarded my advice.”
