Today, Finn Lewis didn’t bring a female companion, but he did bring Jason Wells since he was the one who negotiated the business deal with Emma’s family. Even though Jason’s trading company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Finn Lewis, the Lewis Family was unaware, hence a sudden visit might seem abrupt.
Great Lewis was not in a good mood. The marriage between his daughter and Yves King, the young master of the King Family, was originally facilitated by him. However, the later incident left him quite confused. At the beginning, his daughter ran away which was a fact, and then the young master of the King Family personally promised him to bring Emma back and make her willingly marry him.
So, Great Lewis stopped intervening. However, to his surprise, Yves King came back on his own and apparently had been injured, so he was hospitalized for several months. Then Yves King proposed to cancel the marriage. Whenever Great Lewis asked, the King Family didn’t give any explanation. They just mentioned the young couple’s incompatibility, but they never told Great Lewis absolutely anything about what had happened.
Like this birthday party, Great Lewis still invited the King Family. However, in the past, the leader of the King Family would have come, but now they only sent a younger relative to represent them and there was no sign of Yves King who was rumored to have gone abroad.
“What’s the matter with you? What’s so bad about Yves King? Why did you insist on finding one yourself? How is it now? Did you find anyone? Also, why are you staying in Celeston City? Come back immediately!” Great Lewis took advantage of the ceremony not having started yet, and chided Emma upon her long-awaited arrival.
“Dad, is it right for you to push your biological daughter into a pit of fire? Don’t tell me you don’t know what kind of person Yves King is?” Emma retorted stubbornly.
“Let’s be real, young people make mistakes, right? Men straighten out after they get married,” said Great Lewis.
“Dad, don’t say those things. Otherwise, don’t blame me for spilling some of your secrets. All men are no good,” Emma retorted, rolling her eyes.
“How dare you talk to your father like that?” Great Lewis fumed in fury.
“Don’t raise your voice. No matter how loud you shout, my point remains the same. I know you mean well, but even if you do, you have to consider whether I’ll be happy or not,” said Emma, undeterred by the raised hand of Great Lewis.
The palm, lifted high, ultimately could not come down. Emma was his only daughter, and since childhood he had pampered her and doted on her. So, asking him to be strict with her was something he could not bring himself to do.
“Alright, let’s put the matter of the King Family to rest. They’ve already proposed cancellation of the marriage, and it hasn’t been made public. There are quite a few young men attending today’s party, sons of some of my old comrades and classmates. They are all promising young leaders. It’s your own choice. You’re not getting any younger,” said a helpless Great Lewis.
“Dad, I want to find a boyfriend of my own, and now I have a target,” said Emma hastily.
“A target? Who? What does he do for a living? Emma, your father is not objecting to you finding someone on your own, but are you certain that he is not after your money, or our family’s wealth? It doesn’t matter if it’s about the money. I already have a daughter, so the money will eventually belong to you. I don’t care who you give it to, but I don’t want you to end up with someone unreliable. Isn’t your father thinking about your welfare?” Great Lewis began immediately.
“Dad, I understand. Don’t worry about it, it’s definitely not about our family’s money.” Emma spoke somewhat helplessly. But Emma couldn’t say more than that. She couldn’t tell him that his entire fortune is just pocket change for the man she is mentioning, could she?
“Alright, no matter what, let me tell you this first – whoever wants to be with you must first get my approval,” said Great Lewis decisively.
“Sir, most of the guests have arrived,” the butler came to the door and called in.
Great Lewis stopped his tirade, stood up and said, “Fine, let’s go out. Besides, don’t be sulky and run away on a whim. If you have to go, at least take some money with you. You are really making me worry.”
“Didn’t I tell you where I was?” Emma pouted.
Great Lewis shook his head helplessly, then walked out of the room, with Emma following him. The party would begin at 6 pm, so he couldn’t delay any longer. When Great Lewis came out, all the guests were already standing in the square set up in front of the villa. This kind of birthday party was essentially western-style.
It wasn’t due to any infatuation with foreign culture, but rather because a Western-style buffet party was more conducive to business discussions. It was such a birthday party, guests could engage with many people who are not usually accessible. Therefore, many attended not only to partake in the birthday celebration, but more to discuss business, and network with those within their circle.
Therefore, such wealthy gatherings were usually Western-style parties, and even if there was a Chinese-style segment, it would come later, allowing sufficient time for everyone to mingle.
When Great Lewis came out, a round of applause and warm wishes immediately flooded in. Just as he was about to thank his guests and say a few words from a makeshift podium, the Lewis Family’s housekeeper quickly approached and gestured to him.
Great Lewis, seeing the expression on his housekeeper’s face, immediately knew that something must have happened. If there were no issues, his housekeeper wouldn’t come to interrupt his speech. After apologizing to everyone, he came down from the podium to ask, “What’s the matter?”
“Sir, the doorman reported that Mr. Lewis has arrived. Should we invite him in?” asked the butler.
“Mr. Lewis? Which Mr. Lewis?” Great Lewis was puzzled. There are many people with the surname Lewis, so he had no idea who this particular ‘Mr. Lewis’ was.
“Mr. Finn Lewis,” the housekeeper answered promptly.
“Finn? I don’t know him. Who is he?” Great Lewis was perplexed. The name sounded familiar, but he was certain that he did not know such an individual.
“Sir, he is the richest man in the world,” realizing that his master did not recognize Finn’s name, the housekeeper quickly disclosed Finn’s identity.
Upon hearing the phrase ‘richest man in the world,’ Great Lewis instantly recognized who Finn was. Even though they had never had any direct contact, the fact that Finn had graced his birthday party with his presence was indeed a great honor. In the eyes of people like Great Lewis, although both he and Finn were affluent businesspeople, the gap between their wealth was beyond comparison.
