"If you pass my trials, you can consider me half your master." Li Dong replied with a smile. "But first, you need to pass the trials. You see, the Phoenix Star inheritance is not something anyone can handle. While the trials are simple to see if your body, mind, and soul can handle the inheritance, to actually acquire it is another story. Now with that said, since you are here, you might as well begin. There is no time like the present."
Li Dong did not even give Kana and Ako a chance to say anything before waving his hand, making a hold appear under the two girls. Kana and Ako only felt their feet lose the ground under them before falling into the black abyss below. "Ahhh! Damn old man!" Kana yelled out as she fell.
Li Dong smiled as he snickered. He then waved his hand again, making a large mirror to appear in front of him. "Now then, let's see how she does with the first trial."
"Ooof!" Kana slammed into the ground kicking up dirt and debris. Ako was right behind her, falling on top of her. "Ahh! Master!"
Luckily Ako's body was squishy and did not cause Kana any harm. Otherwise, some of her bones might have broken. "Master, are you okay!? I'm so sorry! I was unable to redirect my landing!"
Kana chuckled as she got up. Ako was checking her for injuries and dusting the dirt off her. "I'm fine. Don't worry."
"Mm… Where are you?" Ako finally calmed down and looked around. The place they were in was faintly lit with dim blue lights but it was hard to tell where they were.
"I'm not sure…" Kana replied as she took a step forward, only to hear a crunching sound under her foot. She looked down, and her face instantly turned black. They were not stepping on dirt or rock but a pile of bones! "Ako, be careful. While that old bastard said the trials were simple, I do not think it will be as easy as he announced."
Watching what was happening in the mirror, Li Dong snorted, hearing Kana calling him a bastard. He didn't understand how he was considered a bastard. All trials had dangers. They were meant to test and temper the ones taking on the trials. There were no benefits without danger. Although Li Dong did not take into account that he literally tossed the two down a big black hole without a word of warning.
Kana's assumption was right, though. Not more than a few minutes later, they began to hear shuffling off in the distance. "Ako, get ready!"
Ako nodded and got into a fighting stance. Kana drew her sword and gripped his hilt as she stared off into the darkness in front of them. When she saw the boney skeletons walking out with swords in their hands and red glowing eyes, she couldn't help but frown. But her face paled when she saw the sheer number in front of her.
Like looking out over the ocean from the beach, a sea of skeletons was all Kana and Ako could see. "Trial of the body, alright. You want to see how fast we can die!?" Kana yelled out. She was truly mad. She did not think a trial of this kind would be so hard!
"Kana, we need to be extra careful. I can sense some strong auras within the group of skeletons." Ako's brow furrowed. She could tell the strength was on par with her own. If one of them attacked her Master…
"We will worry about that when we can. For now, we can only fight. I have a feeling that that old bastard will not let us out even if we are about to die. And I will say this now. I do not plan on dying any time soon!" Kana was angry, truly angry. She knew cultivation was something that came with dangers, but this was too dangerous. She still had so many things to accomplish!
"I will not die here… Ako, we'll make it through this." With these words, Kana charged forward, Ako at her side. She still had a single trump card. Although she did not know how well it would work against these skeletons, she knew her soul was not restricted here. If she could release its pressure, she could have Ako carry her body while she walked around with her soul to suppress the skeletons. But this was only in theory as she still did not know if it would work or not.
Kana's sword slashed out, sending beams of sword rays flying in all directions. Each one smashing skeletons apart. She could only hope her stamina would be able to hold out long enough until the trial was over. She was unsure of what the completion requirements were. She could only hope it was a timed trial. If it was, then she just needed to hold out.
Skeleton after skeleton swung their swords at Kana. Luckily her skin was tough and was able to guard against the strikes. She had to guard on all sides. Her tattered robes did not have much left and barely covered her important bits. But now, with so many swords slashing at her at once, it was getting harder and harder to guard.
"Damn it!" Kana roared in rage! Her roar shook the entire area, causing some of the skeletons to be blown back. She opened her mouth wide and took in a deep breath. At the same time, the image of a phoenix that had disappeared resurfaced, and as she exhaled out, a raging wave of flames spread out in front of her!
Ako shouted in front and quickly jumped back. She never expected her Master to be able to do such a thing. Tens of thousands of skeletons turned to ash in an instant. Even Li Dong had never expected Kana to be able to unleash such a devastating attack with her cultivation realm.. But when he took a closer look, his eyes opened wide. "Phoenix!"
