Chapter 143 Story 143: The Enlightened Selfie

In a small monastery nestled deep in the forest, there lived a young monk named Pema. Pema was different from the other monks. While they spent their days meditating, chanting, and studying ancient scriptures, Pema had a peculiar fascination with something far more modern—his smartphone.

One day, while the other monks were deep in meditation under the Bodhi tree, Pema sneaked behind the temple with his treasured phone. He had discovered a world beyond the peaceful walls of the monastery—one filled with memes, cat videos, and most importantly, selfies.

He loved taking photos of himself making funny faces, especially when he puffed out his cheeks like a little fish, which always made him giggle.

Pema stood beneath a massive tree, the golden rays of the sun filtering through its leaves, casting a soft glow on his round, cheerful face. He adjusted his orange robe, held his phone up, and with a comical expression, snapped another selfie. He giggled to himself, marveling at his creation, as the face on the screen mirrored his own playful spirit.

Suddenly, the head monk, Guru Rinpo, appeared from behind the tree. Startled, Pema quickly hid his phone, his chubby cheeks flushing with embarrassment.

"Pema," Guru Rinpo said in a calm, gentle voice, "What is it that you find so fascinating with that device?"

Pema, unable to lie to his wise teacher, pulled out his phone and sheepishly showed him the selfies he had taken. The old monk studied the photos for a moment, his face unreadable. Pema braced himself for a scolding, but to his surprise, Guru Rinpo smiled softly.

"Ah, Pema," he said, "even in the act of something as trivial as taking a selfie, there is a lesson to be learned."

Pema blinked, confused. "A lesson, Master?"

Guru Rinpo nodded. "You see, just as you capture your image on this phone, our true self, too, is a reflection. But unlike your playful pictures, which show only the outside, true wisdom comes when we look beyond the surface—when we seek to understand who we are within."

Pema stared at his phone, the image of his puckered face staring back at him. For the first time, he understood that while the phone could capture his appearance, it could never capture the essence of his spirit—the joy, the kindness, the laughter that made him who he truly was.

The head monk chuckled, resting a hand on Pema's shoulder. "It's not wrong to enjoy the world, Pema, but remember that inner peace and self-awareness are far more valuable than any picture."

Pema smiled, his round face lighting up with realization. He still loved his phone, but from that day onward, he carried it with a little more mindfulness. Every time he took a selfie, he would remember Guru Rinpo's words and strive to reflect not just his face, but the happiness and light that resided deep within.

And in the quiet moments, when the monks were meditating, Pema would sneak one more funny picture—just for the joy of it.
