Chapter 210: Surprise matching
"Ah , Mr. and Mrs. Weasley how very nice to see you both. You must be here to get your daughters first wand." Olivander greeted the adults in a friendly manner. "Good after noon everyone , I hope it's not a problem but I have been left in charge of the matching process as part of my apprenticeship. Please bare with me if I take longer than expected." Nick said in a polite business tone. The younger members of the family looked very conflicted as if unsure if Nick might match Ginny wrongly on purpose to get back at them for giving him the cold shoulder even though he technically helped them.-
Nick picked up on this and pulled out his license for the umpteenth time "I am a professional so none of you need to worry about me bringing personal matters into my work. Should I make such an error I can assure you that Mr. Olivander would remove me from this shop immediately." he said reassuringly. The entire family looked at Olivander and the old man nodded his head with a reassuring smile that let them relax. Nick didn't lie either as he did his job in the exact manner he was supposed to without any strange actions at all.-
Ginny herself however was horribly embarrassed since part of this process was measuring the body of the witch or wizard getting the wand before making calculation on how they would grow. The reason for this was so that a person with very short limbs as an adult didn't end up with a wand that was uncomfortably large in their hands or a tall person with a small wand(no pun intended). This meant that things like wingspan , neck length , height and posture needed to be thoroughly measured and added to the calculations.-
After that was the fun part where Nick had to begin going through various types of cores and woods in a certain set of lengths to find the correct match. What Nick hadn't known however was that Olivander had played a small trick in which he had switched out the wand made by him from it's box with a wand of the same material that Nick had made with one of Dusk's shed feathers. It was a yew wand of eleven and a quarter inches that was swishy and preferred charm work.-
Nick didn't have time to react when Ginny opened the box and gave the wand a swish like she had been and it let off red sparks showing it's acknowledgement. Nick went pale at the scene and the family saw this and looked worried until Olivander spoke up. "Oh? Now isn't this an interesting outcome." he said with a looked of pure amusement. "What do you mean?" Molly Weasley asked in hopes of understanding what was going on. "You see that particular wand was created by none other than my apprentice here using the feather of the ho-ho on his shoulder." Olivander said honestly.-
The entire family and Harry who was with them all froze dumbfounded at this information. "You made that!?" Ron asked in disbelief and Nick reluctantly nodded. "To be honest I was under the impression it had been dismantled already instead of placed with the rest of the wands for sale." he said while giving Olivander a suspicious look. "I found it a worthy addition to the wares." the old man said unbothered. "You heard the expert on the matter , it should serve you well. Take it as a gift as I'll cover the cost out of pocket since it is my first wand that has ever been matched." Nick said to Ginny with a smile.-
The Weasley family left after that and Nick turned to give Olivander a mean look as it was clear that he did this on purpose. "No need to be upset , my uncle who ran this hop previously did the same to me when I was younger." the old man said with a nostalgic look. Nick could only sigh helplessly and drop the matter while secretly deciding to check each wand before he offers it from now on. The cost of the wand was practically nothing at all as the only part of it sourced by Olivander was the wood which was not very expensive.-
If someone else were to buy though it would either be the standard seven galleons for first years as mandated by the ministry or nearly twenty due to the material prices. A ho-ho feather is very very hard to acquire and the only reason the price was that low was it was a shed feather used in the core rather than one that had been plucked from Dusk before that point. One of those would be in the range of nearly fifty galleons instead , assuming Dusk would allow a feather to be plucked forcefully that is.
