Chapter 346: Mateo Flameheart

Chapter 346: Mateo Flameheart

"W-What just happened folks?! What skill was that?! There was just no way that was a simple fireball from a rookie!!"

After a few minutes of shocked silence, Corey's voice resounded across Balkrow Arena, forcefully restoring the audience's shattered wits.

Right after the referee announced the start of the match, Neil, a scout, confidently reappeared behind Shye using the most basic scout skill, blink strike.

Having an overwhelming class advantage was also the reason why Neil was so confident in winning against Shye.

After all, every mage had to chant for at least three-fourths of a second even with the help of various casting speed improvement buffs be it through equipment, blessings, or skills.

Thus, Shye's sudden chantless fireball caught Neil off-guard.

The match didn't even last ten seconds as an enormous fireball akin to a small sun roared to the skies, obliterating Neil and turning him into an azure ray of light that shot out of the stadium.

[Congratulations! You've earned 8,780 points!]

'Hmm? What the hell? Why only 8,780 points? Isn't there around 30,000 in attendance?!' Shye inwardly cursed in disappointment.

Unbeknownst to him, the audience's brains still haven't caught up yet.

"L-Let's watch the instant replay! That fireball was a bit too fast, no?" Corey said in the mana-powered microphone, motioning for a staff member to replay everything that just happened on the blue holographic screen.

"C-Chantless casting! S-Shye Crowley is a chantless caster!! One of the chosen few among millions, if not hundred millions of mages! A true son of heaven!"

After Corey confirmed that Shye was "born" with the [Chantless Casting] talent, the people gasped in utter shock and disbelief.

[Congratulations! You've earned 29,999 points!]

'That's more like it!' Shye thought inwardly with a satisfactory smile.

Throughout the entire history of Adthiopia, there had only been 37 recorded individuals who were born with the [Chantless Casting] talent.

Among the 37, only three came from Valenzia, while the rest were from other regions.

The first one was born three hundred years ago, the second one a hundred, while the third was currently one of the titled adventurers in Valenzia: Frozen End

And now, Shye's name would once again reverberate proudly across the entire Valenzia Region for being the fourth chantless mage.

Stepping down from the stage with a smile under tens of thousands of awestruck gazes, Shye returned to his seat.

As he did so, a pair of narrowed eyes sternly gazed at him.

'This guy's indeed capable. Fortunately, I prepared a few countermeasures. If I didn't believe their ridiculous claims that this guy could cast skills without chanting, I probably wouldn't have a chance…' Mateo Flameheart, the 7th-ranked overall rookie in Balkrow, inwardly thought, feeling grateful that he decided to believe the crazy rumors surrounding the so-called notorious rookie.

The crowd, including the other participants, remained in disbelief for quite a while, only brought back to reality by Corey's slightly stuttering voice—still in disbelief himself.

The next fourteen matches proceeded as scheduled, and they looked way more exciting than Shye's, whose match ended as soon as it began.

The rookies struggled fiercely against each other—most of them evenly matched, prompting the crowd to stand up and cheer wildly as the rookies of Raven's Blade displayed their prowess, eliciting a few jealous snorts from the rookies of other, higher-ranked guilds who were watching and believed they could do better.

There were a few shocking moments wherein members of Shye's generation such as the fourth-ranked (In this year's Raven's Blade Rookie Admission Exam) Chiizai Otoko, the second-ranked Megan Wolfe, and the first-ranked Percy Phone, defeated their opponents, who were rookies already in their second year as professional adventurers, with ease.

Naturally, their feats stirred quite a huge commotion, prompting the audience to discuss if the said rookies could pose a challenge to Shye Crowley or Mateo Flameheart.

After about an hour, it was finally Mateo Flameheart's turn to take the stage, ranked seventh among all rookies in Balkrow City.

Across from him stood his opponent, Bernard Whoppers Jr., ranked seventh among the rookies in Raven's Blade in terms of guild contribution points.

A powerful opponent.

However, Mateo wasn't concerned.

He already fought Bernard, a mage, multiple times, all of which resulted in his victory.

Hence, there was no doubt in Mateo's heart that he would easily win as he already got Bernard's number down.

Sure enough, promptly after the referee announced the start of the match, Mateo drew his tachi and charged toward Bernard in a straight line, his heavy armor clanking loudly as he did so.

Bernard couldn't help but frown after seeing Mateo's speed once more.

'Fast, but this time, I shall take you down!'

Using his repositioning skills to create significant distance between himself and Mateo, Bernard began chanting. He summoned a series of defensive spells, including earthen walls, flame walls, ice barricades, and aqua barriers, stacking them one in front of the other.

Then, immediately after, Bernard started speaking gibberish once more, casting his new trump card, [Cosmic Impact Lv.2 (Rare)], in hopes of one-shotting Mateo.

Initially, his plan seemed effective as Mateo had no choice but to destroy his defensive spells one by one, buying him ample time to complete his chant.

'Tch, this damn Bernard…forcing me to use the trump card I prepared for Crowley…' Mateo inwardly cursed.

He was confident he could defeat Bernard, but he didn't expect Bernard to unveil a new skill that sent chills down his spine.

The feeling of danger was gradually intensifying, allowing him to sense that Bernard almost finished casting his skill.

'Fine, you made me fight you seriously, you can consider this a small win.'

Assuming a sideways horseback riding stance, Mateo extended his left arm forward, aiming his palm at Bernard, who was chanting a deadly spell.

He then lifted his right arm and aimed his tachi at Bernard.

'Piercing Void!'

Instantly after Mateo thought of his trump card's name, his body turned into a purple blur as he ferociously dashed forward, piercing everything in his wake including Bernard's cosmic impact, a beam attack consisting of a myriad of hues and elements that he just finished casting.

Subsequently, an azure ray of light shot out of the dome, materializing into a shaking Bernard shortly after.

'Hoh? This guy can fight.'
