Chapter 343: The Super Rookie’s Prowess

Chapter 343: The Super Rookie’s Prowess

A month quickly flew by

Shye, not wanting to waste time, immediately tested the limits of his newfound prowess, daring to take on two (B) ranked quests in a single month.

The first one he dared to take was the usual hunting quest wherein he was required to hunt a (B) ranked Dark Orthrus, a three-meter-tall, two-headed dog that was not only agile but also deft and mighty.

Although it wasn't the toughest of (B) ranked monstrous creatures, it was quite the handful as it could also fight from long range by spewing out black exploding balls, dark-purple beam attacks, and gray-coloured X-blasts.

Unfortunately for the Orthrus, Shye was the same.

To be specific, he was stronger than the Dark Orthrus in both melee and ranged combat.

The poor two-headed canine got toyed with as though it was nothing but a random harmless puppy.

As a warrior, Shye was able to easily dodge its paw smash, bite, and pounce attacks due to both his high agility and high intelligence, allowing him to see through the doggy's attacks as though it was a modern-day video played on 0.75x speed.

Sneaking in a few counter-attacks to gradually split its tough hide wide open along with its flesh was also achieved rather easily by Shye.

Hence, upon realizing that it couldn't win in close combat against the unbelievably strong young male human, the Dark Orthrus opted for a long-range approach, decisively switching to maintaining distance while spewing out black balls…dark beams, and X-blasts.

Unfortunately for the dark dual-headed doggy, nothing it threw at Shye worked, as even the simplest of the ashen-haired young man's skills, namely the fireball, the icicle spears, the wind cutters, and the earthen spikes, slightly overpowered all of the Orthrus' ranged skills.

A monstrous creature's instincts had always been razor sharp, thus, it immediately activated its trump card called rabid rage, turning its entire body purple—its eyes—pitch black, appearing extremely sinister and unsettling as its black fur was replaced by purple-colored toned muscles.

It was able to fight back for quite a while—albeit only to a stalemate.

When Shye activated his transformation skills though, the (B) ranked Orthrus didn't even last ten seconds, and he was able to finish his first quest in mere eight days, netting him a hefty reward of 1,700 contribution points and 16,000 silver coins.

As for his second one, it was a gathering quest, however, it proved to be a bit more difficult to complete compared to hunting a Dark Orthrus.

The quest to gather Earth Lingzhi was ranked (B), as all he had to do was retrieve the unique-tier herb called Earth Lingzhi, with its exact location already specified in the quest scroll.

There was a catch though.

The quest's location was inside an expert adventurer zone, where the lowest-ranked creature was (C) and the highest was (A) rank.

A vast area that would surely spell death for regular ruby-ranked adventurers.

In addition to this, the darned lingzhi was located right in the middle of the territories of two (A-) ranked creatures: an Ironhide Centaur and a Highland Harpy.

Shye was confident of his strength, however, he didn't dare risk fighting both creatures at once.

Hence, he had no choice but to wait until one of them left to hunt food.

Only, Shye didn't expect that the lingzhi's mystical allure would be enough to lure in lower-ranked creatures, making them dare tread upon the dangerous territory of the two dangerous (A-) ranked creatures in hopes of obtaining and consuming the earthen lingzhi.

Consequently, the two creatures did not need to leave their territories as there were always hypnotized creatures walking in by themselves.

Still, although seldom, there were days when the lingzhi failed to attract prey for the centaur and the harpy, thus, they had to leave their territories and hunt.

However, neither of the two was willing to let go of the lingzhi as it made both of their lives many times easier, causing them to enter an agreement that when one was away, the other had to guard.

This was the situation Shye was waiting for.

There were a few times when he was tempted to throw caution to the wind and snatch the lingzhi under the two (A-) ranked creatures' watch.

Fortunately, his experience in fighting a simulated (A-) ranked Ember Wyvern during the Adventurer Academy Competition Finals ultimately allowed him to refrain from doing something stupid.

Opting to patiently wait for an opportune time to snatch the lingzhi, days flew by.

Fortunately, three days before the rookie representative selection tournament, the Highland Harpy left to hunt, allowing Shye to jump in and snatch the lingzhi, earning the ire of the Ironhide Centaur as he did so.

Forced to fight the four-meter-tall creature holding an enormous, two-handed battle-axe for his life, Shye drew his greatswords.

He didn't dare underestimate the daunting centaur, hence, his ultimate goal was to safely retreat out of the centaur's territory but unfortunately, the (A-) ranked centaur guarding the lingzhi didn't fancy the thought of allowing him to escape easily.

It had four strong legs, making it impossible for Shye to outrun it through normal means, forcing him to fight it head-on for a few times.

Metallic noises reverberated across the centaur's territory as Shye's greatswords repeatedly clashed with the centaur's battle axe.

To his surprise, despite being pushed back in their direct clashes and feeling his arms go numb from the centaur's strength, he never felt that his life was in danger.

This tempted him to use his trump cards and try to defeat the centaur.

Ultimately though, he opted to safely retreat for fear of having to deal with both creatures and put himself in unnecessary danger.

He would have ample chances to explore his current limits in the future, hence, there was no need for him to force things right now.

*ROOOAAAR!*

Clouds of dust lingered in the air as Shye gradually left the centaur behind, employing the use of his mana wings and various repositioning skills to successfully flee from the perilous territory.

Realizing that the ashen-haired young adventurer was slowly leaving it in the dust, a terrifying, exasperated roar escaped from the (A-) ranked monstrous creature's throat, prompting the harpy to return.

Unfortunately for it, by the time it returned, the young, sneaky thief was already long gone.

Unbeknownst to Shye, the elusive night thief, a fierce battle erupted that night between two creatures who were once allies, resulting in the death of the Ironhide Centaur.

The reason for their battle? Anger.

Meanwhile, the culprit was already marching happily along a well-trodden path, on the way back to Balkrow City to turn yet another quest in, earning him a whopping 22,000 silver coins and 2,100 guild contribution points.
