Chapter 455: 454 You need to calm down a bit
For a moment, there was silence in the luxurious bedroom, broken only by the sound of a hairdryer.
Faint sweet aroma filled the air, wafted out by the hairdryer. Wen Ran sat unmoving, her gaze steady on the handsome face reflected in the mirror.
She couldn’t help but conjecture about what had happened. What could have compelled Mo Xiuchen to want to return home?
If she had to guess, he must have already booked their plane tickets. He was probably waiting for her hair to dry so he could tell her the news. As this thought crossed her mind, her hands, which had been folded together, tightened their grip.
“Ranran, your hair is dry now,”
About ten minutes later, Mo Xiuchen’s gentle voice sounded above her head. The reflection in the mirror showed him wearing a soft smile as he gazed at her lovingly and adoringly, just as always.
Wen Ran responded with a small smile of her own. She reached up to touch her hair and made a show of speaking lightly, “Yes, it’s dry. So, are you going to tell me what’s going on now?”
As she finished speaking, she did not look at his reflection. Instead, she turned to him, looking up from a tilted head.
Mo Xiuchen reached for her hand and helped her stand up from her chair. He handed her some clothes and softly said, “Change into these, and then I’ll tell you.”
A wave of apprehension washed over Wen Ran.
Had he really booked the plane tickets?
She did not reply but silently took the clothes. She changed in front of him, undisturbed by his steady gaze as she expertly dressed. There were no questionable intentions in his eyes, only an unfathomable depth.
Once she was dressed, Mo Xiuchen finally spoke, a note of worry evident in his deep voice, “Ranran, something happened in G City. We need to go back immediately. But you need to promise me that once I tell you, you’ll stay calm and follow my lead, alright?”
The hand Wen Ran was using to zip up her dress paused. Her clear eyes fixed on him, “Tell me.”
Taking a step forward, Mo Xiuchen loomed over her. He reached out and took her hand in his, holding her gaze and softly broke the news, “Xiaoxiao has been kidnapped.”
Wen Ran froze.
Her eyes, filled with shock, widened at his words. “Who did it?” she choked out.
“Xiao Wenqing.”
The light in Mo Xiuchen’s eyes slightly dimmed as he felt her hand growing colder in his. His heart sharply contracted, “Ranran, Xiaoxiao will be fine. You can trust me on that.”
In her gaze, reflected by the crystal mirror, something welled up briefly in her pale face before quickly vanishing again.
Her lips pursed lightly before she looked up at Mo Xiuchen, saying calmly, “Xiao Wenqing’s target is me, correct? She’s using Xiaoxiao to threaten me. She knows that Xiaoxiao was injured in a car accident because of me. If anything happens to her, I won’t be able to stand by.”
Mo Xiuchen’s brow furrowed.
Ranran was right. He couldn’t deny it, nor could he deceive her. All he could do was reassure her softly, “Ranran, it’s true that Xiao Wenqing is after you, but I won’t let her have you. I’ve told Ah Feng to contact Lu Zhiyan. If she calls again, we can pin her location.”
“Let’s hurry back.”
Wen Ran didn’t seem to hear what Mo Xiuchen said. Her mind was a whirl of chaos. The only thing she could think about was not letting Xiaoxiao come to harm.
Even if she had to exchange her own life, she couldn’t allow Xiaoxiao to get hurt because of her.
“Alright.”
Mo Xiuchen wanted to comfort her but seeing the worry and urgency in Wen Ran’s eyes, he swallowed his words. He only responded with a soft confirmation. They quickly packed their belongings and as he carried the luggage, they both left the room.
G City
Ever since Bai Xiaoxiao’s disappearance that afternoon, Mother Bai had been on edge.
At this moment, Luo Haofeng and Gu Kai sat in Bai’s living room, briefly informing them that Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran were on their way back and would arrive in G City by tomorrow.
“President Luo, Doctor Gu, please, you must not call the police. The kidnappers said that if we do, we won’t get Xiaoxiao back,”
Mother Bai pleaded, her eyes red from crying. All of this was too much to bear. Her only daughter had already been involved in a car accident earlier this year, and now, she had been kidnapped.
Both Gu Kai and Luo Haofeng exchanged a glance before softly assuring her, “Aunt Qiao, don’t worry. We will definitely rescue Xiaoxiao.”
Mr. Bai hesitated before finally speaking. He looked at Gu Kai’s determined expression, then at his heartbroken wife, and mustered up the courage to relay the kidnapper’s message, “The person who kidnapped Xiaoxiao… is it Xiao Wenqing? On the phone, they said that unless we exchange Ranran for her, we should prepare for Xiaoxiao’s funeral.”
“That evil woman Xiao Wenqing… How has Ranran provoked her so that she repeatedly tries to kill her?”
Mother Bai looked up, the tears still fresh in her red, swollen eyes. She wanted Xiaoxiao back, but she wasn’t selfish enough to exchange the girl for Ranran. Especially since she knew well how much Xiao Wenqing loathed Wen Ran. If Wen Ran fell into her hands, death might be too kind an outcome.
“Uncle Bai, Aunt Qiao, you can rest assured. No matter what method I have to use, I will definitely rescue Xiaoxiao for you,”
Gu Kai’s facial expression changed subtly several times before reassuring them in a firm tone. Xiaoxiao had been kidnapped because of his sister. It was his responsibility to get her back safely.
“What about Ranran? You’re not really going to exchange her for Xiaoxiao are you?”
Mother Bai’s gaze was filled with worry as she looked at Gu Kai. Xiao Wenqing only had one demand, and beyond that, she didn’t know how else they could possibly save Xiaoxiao.
“We won’t.”
Standing with a layer of frost on his face, Gu Kai promised, “We will not use my sister as a bargaining chip. Once we confirm Xiao Wenqing’s whereabouts, we will certainly be able to rescue Xiaoxiao.”
When they left the Bai Family residence, both Luo Haofeng and Gu Kai were silent, neither of them speaking a word. When they were in the car, Gu Kai received a call from Wen Jin.
He pressed the answer button, and simply uttered, “Hello?” Wen Jin’s voice traveled from the phone, “Ah Kai, has Ranran returned yet?”
“Yes, they’re already boarding the plane. They’ll be home tomorrow.”
Looking out of the car window, Gu Kai faced the quiet city under the sullen night sky, his mood heavy and fraught. “You’re not considering using Ranran to exchange for Xiaoxiao, are you? I won’t agree to that,” he said.
Gu Kai responded with a self-mocking smile, “Ranran is also my sister. Don’t worry, I won’t use her as a bargaining chip. What did Lu Zhiyan say? Have they found Xiao Wenqing or Wu Tianyi’s whereabouts?”
“They probably haven’t left G City yet, but it’s so big. It may take a while to figure out where Xiao Wenqing and Xiaoxiao are hiding.”
“Alright, Ah Mu has also sent people to search for Xiao Wenqing. I’ll ask if there’s any news from him later.”
“What about Mo Zixuan? Would he know? After all, Xiao Wenqing is his mother,” Wen Jin thought out loud before asking uncertainly.
