Chapter 462 Tasks (III)
Chapter 462 Tasks (III)
--
The task assigned to him in the Tech Hall was to supervise the assembly lines.
Cedric was within a large factory with all sorts of machines pumping out mechanical parts; some were components of larger pieces, and some were stand-alone parts, but the one he saw the most were, of course, parts for androids.
Since he's been paying attention to his surroundings, he knew that the big shots of the camp increased the production of androids to help out with the menial tasks to free up some people for more important tasks. That's why it's not surprising to him to see all of this.
Though it's a bit of a pity since he couldn't practice his other refinement chapters while he's here just yet. There's just no material for him to work on, that's why. Most of the materials here, even the scraps, were needed to create all this, leaving him with nothing to use.
This evidently made this task a bit boring for him. With Cedric's acute senses, it's not that difficult for him to supervise this entire factory. Every minute change within this place was within his sights, and he allotted enough of his thought chambers to pay close attention to everything.
While it might seem very unprofessional of them to assign an entire factory to a freshly arrived cadet, these people were helpless too. The lack of people was just the bottleneck that they couldn't break through. Moreover, there are hundreds of factories like this one, and they can't possibly supply the appropriate amount of people for the task simply because there aren't enough of them around. And so, they can only do it this way.
It's for this reason that this task pays well.
Fortunately, the majority of the machines here were operated through the system. They were programmed to do most of the work for Cedric, so he just needed to make sure that all of them were functioning as intended; that in itself wasn't all that hard.
But Cedric refused to waste precious time even while at work, especially one that is this easy. But since he couldn't practice his other refinement techniques here, even the old ones, because that might cause a violent reaction in the factory, he could only settle for the next best thing.
And that is to study the technology this camp was using.
Cedric had an impression of the overall system that's running this camp. He hacked one of the buildings on his first day and had encountered it already. However, back then, he didn't dare to linger too long because he was on a time crunch. This time, it's different, obviously.
No, Cedric wasn't planning to hack the security system. He also had no intention of provoking the system AI either. Cedric wasn't a fool; the system AI that's assisting the Border Patrol Guardians wasn't an entity he could provoke.
He just wants to be more familiar with it so that he won't get confused in the future. Moreover, if he could learn more about the technology they use here, he could share it with his people to improve their livelihood even further.
Of course, if there was a chance for him to focus on mastering the cosmic furnace spell instead, he would undoubtedly prioritize that first over this. But since he couldn't, for now, this would just have to do.
**
Time passed by just like this, and within a month, Cedric had earned enough merit points to complete his yearly quota. This was confirmed by the system itself, and the confirmation had been stamped by the insignia of the Border Patrol Guardians; it couldn't be any more legitimate than that.
Truthfully, Cedric could've ended his task cycles from here and spent the rest of his time cultivating or practicing the Cosmic Furnace Spell. However, Cedric didn't stop here. He chose to continue with his tasks.
Cultivating was pretty much meaningless to Cedric. He's already at the peak of the Grand Solar Sage Realm. All he has to do is polish his foundations even more so that his entry to the Transition Realm could be solid. And this isn't something that couldn't be done by simply locking himself up in seclusion.
Just an hour of daily energy circulation was enough. Any more than that and he'd be pressuring his base, which might push him directly to the brink of breakthrough, and that is something that he can't have right now because he has yet to master the Cosmic Furnace Spell.
Cedric even went as far as to sealing his own progress with runes, making sure that he wouldn't make an accidental slip-up.
His ambitions are high. Cedric wants to perfect the cosmic furnace spell to its acme, allowing him to refine his existence not only with the five fundamental elements but also with lightning, space, time, life, and death laws. As for the Karmic Laws, that comes by in itself; Cedric doesn't have to concern himself with it.
So far, even with a few opportunities around, Cedric was getting enough practice with the five fundamental element refinement. He's the most familiar with it, and thus, he faced the least difficulty using it for refinement.
Lightning was a bit harder, but that was just it. Space, Time, Life, and Death, though? Yeah, these ones are going to take time to master. Although he had a clear grasp of these laws, using them to refine himself was a completely different matter.
Also, there's the fact that he had to practice using all of these elements at the same time.
Remember, Cedric couldn't rely on anyone or anything during his breakthrough to the Transitional Realm. Any interference will be met with a fierce backlash from the heavens. Cedric must not only facilitate the refinement by himself; he also had to endure the pain and suffering it will cause him when the time comes.
The road ahead of him is still long. Fortunately, Cedric has a lot of time.
It started out slow, especially during the adjustment period, but eventually, Cedric has grown used to the atmosphere of the camp.
There were no more invasions after the first day, which was rather fortunate. He heard that the 'hole' had been patched and had long since disappeared. Wherever it appears next is unknown, but so long as it doesn't appear directly above or close to the Northwestern Scarlet Camp, then it is not their responsibility anymore.
Soon, six months passed by since his arrival here. And Cedric, being the diligent little bee that he is, had garnered some level of reputation in some parts of the camp where he appears frequently.
'The Competent Cadet' or the 'Cadet of the'Year'—that's what they usually call him. It's because of his work ethics and his perfect, and sometimes above and beyond, performance that made him remarkable.
In these six months, Cedric went from an apprentice in the Weapon Refinement Hall to becoming one of its forging masters. He had worked with many other forging masters before, and they have nothing but praise for him, especially in his work ethics. Cedric learned their ways and absorbed knowledge like a sponge. It didn't take long before they started giving him independence, and once his performance stabilized, his position as a forging master solidified.
Now, not only was Cedric taking up forging quotes to earn more merit points, he's also getting a lot of excess materials to use for his own equipment. And this on top of getting more and more practice with his refinement spells.
Aside from becoming a forging master, Cedric has also become one of the veteran healers of the camp. He had yet to meet a patient he couldn't cure. At most, it only becomes a little challenging to him, but nothing really stumped him.
Most of his regular patients were already used to being treated as practice tools. They had no complaints at this point since, by the end, Cedric will always nurse them back to their peak.
There were others who already discovered that he had gone above and beyond, healing even their deepest and hidden injuries. His treatment was so effective that most of the people he treated were more energetic and healthier once he's done with them.
Of course, his fellow healers, and especially his patients, had commended him greatly with his job. Some even said that it's a pity that he couldn't be a resident healer instead.
As for his work at the Tech Hall factories, well, it's over now. The mass production of androids has ceased recently, and those androids could not be seen everywhere. With this being over, the need for supervisors lessened greatly, and so did the pay. And since he's already familiar with the technology and couldn't get any more chances to practice his refinement spell, Cedric unhesitatingly dropped it.
But even though he's just cycling through two tasks only, Cedric's earnings didn't go lower; they went higher instead.
It's mostly because of his performance and the commendations of the people around him. Even the big shots of the camp were starting to notice him.
And because of this, just six months after his arrival at the Northwestern Scarlet Camp, Cedric was already eligible for a promotion.
