Chapter 84: Reporting In
Chapter 84: Reporting In
Anything related to his mission in the Demon Tower was censored off. Since that was the case, it was better not to get too friendly with others at random.
Soon, Hiro once again entered Asmir's throne room. Then, the servant who accompanied Hiro left, leaving him all alone.
A while later, holy light censored the tall staircase, and Asmir's voice drifted over from above. "This seat is busy, speak quickly."
Hiro's lips twitched, feeling a little awkward being confronted with a style of speech of his own introduction.
However, he wasn't going to harp on this matter now.
Hiro cleared his throat. "Your foundation in the laws of cause and effect is being undermined, did you notice anything?"
The throne room descended into silence for a while. Then, Hiro felt the space shift, recognizing it as Asmir's method to isolate them.
Her voice then drifted over as she asked, "What did you find out?"
Even as she asked, she was already sweeping the entire stronghold with her senses, trying to find the discrepancies mentioned by Hiro.
"Can I get a map of the stronghold?" Hiro asked, and a map appeared on the conference table the next instant.
Hiro walked to the map while explaining his discoveries, "It was just a coincidence because I'm in the habit of keeping my powers sealed, making me no different from an ordinary demon without any activities of demonic energy in my body.
"The defective areas are very small, barely noticeable under normal circumstances espoused when the patrolling teams are above the standard of ordinary demons.
"Take this spot for example, there's a flaw in the operation of the cause and effect laws which would result in an endless loop, unless the volume of energy reaches above a certain threefold."
Hiro pointed towards the location of the first glitch zone and elaborated on his findings, assumptions, and worst-case scenarios.
Asmir didn't say anything, but Hiro was certain that she was carefully investigating the aforementioned glitch area.
A while later, the space returned to normal and Asmir's voice sounded, "This seat appreciates your efforts. I'll send orders to include ordinary demons into the patrol teams, and they will report any discrepancies to you."
"Eh?" Hiro was a little troubled. However, an order was an order, so he could only compromise and negotiate.
"I don't want anyone to contact me directly, as it would impede my progress in my other mission to identify traitors. How about this? Give each team a map, have them mark out the conspicuous positions, and I'll review the maps at a later date."
"You're worried that you'll get caught in the crossfire? Don't worry, this seat can guarantee your safety."
Hiro's mind spun and he said, "Why don't you put this responsibility in the hands of someone else? After they're done with it, they can report to me directly."
"Alright, then. I can allow you this one request for your efforts. Do you have someone in mind?"
"Yes, actually I do…"
The image of a certain maid appeared in Hiro's mind as he smiled. Even if she didn't wish to help him voluntarily, he would drag her into the murky waters.
Asmir didn't mind. At least on the surface, everyone in the stronghold was her subjects and she could order them as she pleased.
However, the glitch areas were a true danger.
If her enemies positioned themselves inside those glitch areas during a crucial moment, they could easily evade her attacks and calculations that are being powered by the laws of causality.
Luckily, she discovered this problem early.
Hiro soon left the throne room. Asmir didn't ask about Medusa and Hans, she didn't even mention their existence the entire time.
It seemed like she was turning a blind eye to Hiro's actions as long as they weren't affecting her directly or indirectly.
The moment he descended from the highest floor of the Demon Tower, Hiro pulled out his character screen and began to upgrade his {Espionage I} skill.
He spent 2,800 achievement points to upgrade the skill from {Espionage I} to {Espionage IV}.
Hiro stood rooted to the spot for a while, digesting the techniques and information that suddenly appeared in his mind.
These techniques included attentiveness to details, sixth sense enhancement, lie detection, disguise, tracking, etc.
Since Hiro didn't have any suspects in mind at the moment, he decided to leave the Demon Tower directly.
Whoever acted weird and tried to keep an eye on him from the shadows ought to be a suspect. While walking down the various hallways and spiral stairs, Hiro remembered the faces of many servants and followers.
The list wasn't long nor short, but he found at least two or three suspects every five floors or so.
Some of them could be innocent, and they're probably nothing more than curious about Hiro. However, others among them could be potential spies.
At the very least, he should expect to be followed by a group of demons on his way back to the Passione Tavern.
Using movement techniques from demonic arts, another half a day elapsed when Hiro finally made it back to the tavern.
However, something seemed off about it.
A stench of blood hung in the air, and it was eerily silent inside.
"Master, be careful," Medusa hissed, coiling even tighter on Hiro's neck. Hans was also exhibiting signs of hostility.
A crowd of demons gathered around the tavern but no one dared to enter.
Hiro's brows furrowed deeply, and after taking a deep breath, he pushed through the crowd and entered the bar floor.
Shards of wood and glass cracked and shattered beneath his boots the moment Hiro stepped inside, but what caught his eye was something else.
Three young demons dressed fashionably sat in one corner, chatting and laughing while watching the five waitresses.
The five of them were tied up by the wrists and hung up, streaks of whip lashes all over their bodies.
Warm, purple blood dripped on the ground as their unconscious bodies swayed unsteadily.
"Oh, welcome back!" One of the young demons laughed and clapped his hands.
He asked with a smile, "I heard you sell and buy information, right? Ah, don't bother with the shabby reception, your little maids were very rude and needed to be taught a lesson."
Hiro kneaded his forehead, feeling a headache coming on.
Hiring people to work might prove a little difficult after today's episode, but the fame of this place could also shoot up depending on how he handled things.
Hiro silently synchronized with the Daoist character to make use of its powerful physical stats, as he didn't plan on using any energy whatsoever. Experience new stories on m v|l e'-NovelBin.net
Even without spells and arts, the physical might of a body cultivator at the peak of Tier-5 was more than enough to handle this group of arrogant heirs.
After making sure that no sneak attacks would strike him, Hiro began to process the events of the day.
"Ah," Hiro clapped his hands, putting on the act of someone who just got enlightened to a great fact. "I must have been followed on my way to the Demon Tower, right?"
Hiro accounted for demons following him from the tower back to the tavern but forgot to account for the other way around.
The moment these young heirs confirmed his connection to the Demon Tower, they decided to act.
Those in the know were already aware that the wind in the stronghold was about to change, and it was about time for everyone to pick sides.
It wasn't difficult to figure out Asmir's intentions behind allowing one of her subordinates to start buying and selling information.
However, those families must be worried about what type of information would Asmir allow this little tavern to sell.
Over the years, she must be aware of many secrets that couldn't see the light of day, or at the very least, this information shouldn't land in the hands of the enemy.
Hiro confirmed this assumption from the mission briefing hovering above each of the three young masters.
There were hints that they were tasked with making sure no secrets of their families were to be sold through a third party.
However, each of the three had a different end goal for their mission, indicating the difference in their ambitions and goals.
The young master on Hiro's left nodded with a hint of disappointment in his tone, "Smart, but not too smart. Is this the standard of someone taking on such an important position?"
Hiro shrugged and asked, "I'm curious, how come you're acting so lawlessly?"
This time, it was the man on Hiro's right side who spoke up, "The law regiment won't bother with something so trivial, we can pay the compensation money after we're done here and walk off scott-free."
The three of them laughed, treating it as spending lavishly for once.
"But I have to say," the same demon shook his head in ridicule. "You're really heartless, you didn't even spare your waitresses a second glance."
Hiro cracked his neck and knuckles, warming up a little as he said, "If they can't endure this bit of hardship, they wouldn't have been hired to begin with, right?"
