Chapter 329 Survivors (2)
Chapter 329 Survivors (2)
The group moved down the hallway, systematically opening each cell. Some were empty, others held people in varying states of experimentation. Most were too weak to move, their bodies damaged by the various horrors they suffered through.
Thankfully, Kain had the Vespid guards to help transport the survivor and fortunately, or rather unfortunately, the number of survivors was not greater than the number of Vespids.
There were 19 survivors in total, and unlike the laboratory in Brightstar City that only had children, this one held children and adults.
Watching as the last survivor was carried outside of the building, Kain turned to Serena.
"Time to make this house of horrors disappear." He said.
Despite its massive size, the majority of the building was still made of ordinary construction materials.
Therefore, the combination of both Kain and Serena's contracts, specifically Aegis and the Elemental Guardian, was able to turn the majority of the building into rubble within moments, with all of the controlled guards still inside. For good measure, they even burned the remains of the building.
Carrying the survivors using their contracts, they reached the house on the outskirts and contacted their respective schools. However, help from Starfire College won't arrive until tomorrow, while Dark Moon College may take even longer.
In the meantime, Lina finally demonstrated why she was included as the third member of this mission.
Kain and Serena helped categorize the survivors according to the severity of their injuries.
Of the 19 survivors, one girl who appeared to be in her early twenties hadn't yet been operated on, according to her she was a waitress at one of the clubs owned by Roman before she was kidnapped. They had had her for less than 48 hours before Kain and the others arrived. Aside from some bruises that were easily treated, and the mental scars from the horrors she witnessed that Bea helped erase, she was fine.
However, the situations of the other 18 survivors were much worse. Surprisingly, the next "healthiest" survivor was actually the boy that had bat-like wings grafted onto him. Since an important organ or body part of his hadn't been cut off, his situation was relatively easy to deal with.
Lina separated all of the tissue from the grafted-on wings from his own using her gift, while Kain provided royal jelly to quickly heal the remaining scars and Bea offered 'mental treatment.'
There were 4 other survivors with alterations that were almost as easy to fix—one with gills transplanted onto their neck, one with feathered wings, and 2 that had additional limbs grafted onto them. Once these foreign body parts were completely removed, their situations returned to normal.
The next easiest to deal with were probably those injected with foreign substances—had Kain and Serena been alone, they would have been helpless to purify their blood.
However, due to her gift, Lina was easily able to separate the components of the blood that came from spiritual creatures, the thick black liquid they'd injected into 8 of the patients was collected into a bucket which they then set aside for the staff from the colleges to analyze when they arrive.
However, there were 5 survivors that Lina wouldn't be able to treat alone.—4 of them were like the young boy they had previously found who was crying tears of blood. Once they had gotten him to finally open his eyes, they were greeted by the jarring sight of large yellow eyes with horizontal rectangular pupils—resembling a goat.
Like those that had unimportant body parts transplanted onto them, Lina could easily separate the goat eyes from the boy, without any harm to his actual body. However, neither Lina nor Kain and Serena had the ability to grow back body parts.
Therefore, the boy as well as another 3 victims that had more important body parts—a heart, a pair of legs, and a portion of the brain—removed and replaced, couldn't be treated through Lina's efforts alone.
They would need to wait for help from the colleges who would likely have healers capable of regenerating body parts—hopefully, the healers are willing to take the request…
There was only 1 survivor whose situation was drastically different from the others. A boy who appeared to be in his early teens was not injected with any foreign material or had any foreign body parts transplanted onto him. In fact, at first glance the boy appeared to be perfectly fine.
Kain stood over the boy with the sigils carved into his back, his expression dark. The sight of the intricate, blood-red markings made his stomach turn as they seemed to emanate a malevolent aura. The array was elaborate, its lines and symbols etched with cruel precision, glowing faintly as if it still retained some dormant power.
Once Lina finished helping the others to the best of her ability, she joined them next to the young teen lying on his stomach shirtless. "Can we help him?" she asked, her voice trembling with concern.
Kain frowned, his gaze lingering on the markings. "Not here. This isn't something we can just remove with brute force or healing. If we damage the array the wrong way…" He let the thought hang in the air, the implication clear.
Serena sighed, frustration flashing across her face. "We'll need an expert. Someone who can decipher what these sigils mean and how they're tied to him."
This boy was different from Gabriel. Kain knew next to nothing about sigils and wasn't confident in helping him; however, there were many blacksmiths, array masters, and other professionals affiliated with the colleges that were experts in sigils and would better be able to help.
Meanwhile, Gabriel's predicament of needing to become a beast-tamer and cultivate to better control the excess power in the artificial core implanted into him was a different problem that Kain knew all of the top researchers in the empire would be just as helpless against. After all, getting ordinary people to reliably awaken an affinity was something all nations had been helpless with since the dawn of time.
But Kain's gut told him that he may actually be Gabriel's best chance.
